HANDLING PIERCING JEWELRY

First things first, we recommend to always see an experienced professional in any situation where changing or handeling you piercing jewelry is requiered.

With that said, as this is not always an option, it is important for you to know the type of jewelry you are wearing and how it works in the event that you might need to change or remove it yourselves.

If you are not certain- make sure to ask your piercer!

Generally, there are a few main types of piercing jewelry:

Barbells & Labrets - straight bars, curved bars (also sometimes referred to as "banana" bars in Hebrew) and curved bars (also sometimes referred to as "horseshoe" bars in Hebrew).  with removable ends from either one side of the bar or both, usually threaded (screwed on & off).

CBR (Captive Bead Ring) - A round hoop with a small removable part, usually a ball / bead or segment that fits in the hoop opening via indents on its side and is held in place by the pressure applied by the hoop.

Clicker - A round hoop with a segment attached with a hinge, that clicks open and closed (hence the name).

Seam Ring / Seamless Ring - A round hoop that is opened and closed by twisting / torque.

Threadless* - This jewelry will usually be a barbell or labret but without threads that allow ends to be screwed on. Instead, the back side of the jewelry end will have a small metal pin with a slight bend on it, the end can then be fitted into the bar and is held in place by the pressure caused by the bend in the pin. To remove a threadless end simply pull the two parts of the jewelry away from each other, preferably in a twisting motion .

Dermal / Surface bar** - Ends for surface and dermal jewelry are threaded are screwed on and off.

* Threadless jewelry is very simple to handle but it's not very commonly used in Israel. it's important to know if any of the jewelry you are wearing is threadless, since trying to open this kind of jewelry can be a very frustrating experience if you don't know how (or don't realise that its threadless).

** Our definitive recommendation for this type of piercing jewelry is to never try and change or open it yourselves ever. As we previously stated, we always recommend letting a professional change or handle your piercing jewelry so that it can be done correctly and safely. This recommendation is even more true when handling a piece of jewelry that is partly implanted under you skin.
